What the exam actually is
The Terraform Associate is the shortest and most approachable exam here. It tests whether you understand the core workflow, what state actually is, and how modules and providers fit together. It is not a trick exam, but it does expect precision about state and about commands you may have never needed at work.
Who it is for
- Engineers writing Terraform in production
- Platform teams standardising on infrastructure as code
- Candidates who want a fast, genuine credential while preparing a longer one
Prerequisites
None. A few months of writing real Terraform makes most of the syllabus feel familiar.
Where candidates lose points
- State: locking, remote backends, and what terraform state mv actually does
- Commands rarely used at work still appear: taint, import, console, force-unlock
- Know the difference between HCP Terraform features and open-source CLI features
- Provider and module version constraint syntax is tested precisely
Why it is worth doing
It is the least expensive way to add a recognised credential to a profile, and the state-management material genuinely changes how people work afterwards.
